Eduard Steinberg (1937–2012), son of the poet and translator Arkady Steinberg, lived in Tarusa in the 1950s. From the late 1960s he belonged to the circle of Moscow nonconformists together with Ilya Kabakov, Erik Bulatov and Viktor Pivovarov. His language is known as metageometry; its roots lie in Malevich's Suprematism. In 1970–1985 he built his paintings from a few geometric signs on a light ground. From 1992 he lived mainly in Paris and exhibited with Galerie Claude Bernard.
